Cover charge depends on the night. For blues jam sessions, the charge is usually Y1000, plus a minimum order of Y1000. For well-known bands, the charge runs from Y1500 to Y2500, or higher for bands from abroad.

From the north exit of Nakano Station, head straight up Nakano Sun Mall, the covered shopping mall. Turn right at the third street to the right, and it’s the second building on the left. There’s a brown sign and circular stairs to the second floor.

Bright Brown is a great blues club smack in the middle of the busy Nakano area, just one stop from Shinjuku. It was located there long before the shopping mall became busy with foreign tourists. It’s an easy place to like. Serving tasty comfort food, including chili, hot dogs, and pasta, as well as nachos, French fries, and other classic American dishes, they feature craft beers and Japanese sake to wash it all down and get into the music.

Some nights are dedicated to recorded music, others to live blues from local musicians, and occasionally jazz. Thursdays are reserved for jam sessions, which welcome pros, amateurs, students, and anyone with enough nerve to get up and play their favorite three chords. Most evenings the music kicks off at 19:30, but on Sundays it’s a bit earlier, so be sure to check the schedule.

Bright Brown is a super-comfy place to hang out and lie back into soulful, blues-drenched music. It’s dedicated to featuring the best blues players in Japan, who regularly appear. Jazz is also featured, so if you’re hankering for blues and blues only, be sure to check the schedule. The bands are introduced clearly on the site.

A great place to drop in after shopping in Nakano, but it’s best to plan for a night out to hear the deep feeling of the blues for two complete sets. You’ll be glad you did. It’s a very cool place.
